The Art of Bullet Journaling: What I Learned from My Own Journey

I have always loved paper. I love crafting with paper, whether it's creating paper flowers, collaging with vintage finds at SCRAP , or making handmade paper.  I also like handwritten to-do lists because I like crossing off my accomplishments! So it may seem surprising that I was quite late to the Bullet Journaling method.

I've heard about bullet journaling for close to 10 years, but it always seemed a little too fussy and time-consuming for me. I also don't love my handwriting, and most Bullet Journals I saw were so beautiful. But a few months ago, when revisiting my to-do system and realizing it was lacking, I decided to give it a try. On a whim, I went to Arch, one of my favorite art supply stores in San Francisco, and bought an official Bullet Journal.

The journals have been beautifully crafted in collaboration with Leuchtturm1917, a German stationery company. After reading the included booklet and watching a few videos, I dove in. So far, I have kept my Bujo (as people call them) very simple: a page for my monthly objectives followed by a grid that includes 6 days per page. The process of sitting down with a cup of tea and my favorite pen to grid out a few months at a time feels calming.

My bullet journal is not beautiful. It's not full of watercolor sketches or beautiful hand-lettering, but it is practical. I like that each month I can capture my big objectives, and that there's a follow-up system for noting what I've done, and what I have moved into the future. My bullet journal practice is a work in progress, but I am definitely enjoying this systematic approach to capturing random to-dos for my business and personal life.

Ryder Carroll, the creator of the Bullet Journal method, describes it as "A mindfulness practice disguised as a productivity system," and I have to agree. You can learn more about the Bullet Journal method on their website

Do you Bullet Journal? If so, I'd love to hear how the practice has been for you.
